Tips for Properly Disposing of an Old Air Filter
Replacing your air filters regularly is an important part of caring for your HVAC system. But disposing of an old filter can be tricky – especially if you’ve never done it before.
This article provides step-by-step instructions for replacing your older air filter with a new one in the best way possible.
1. Turn Your HVAC System Off
First thing first, you should begin this process by turning off your HVAC system. That way, you don’t risk receiving any unwanted electrical shocks when you open up the unit to remove the air filter.
2. Get a Plastic Trash Bag and Some Tape
Next, get yourself a standard plastic trash bag and some tape. This is what you’re going to place the air filter into when you remove it.
We recommend using tape to close up the trash bag when you’re finished. This will ensure that you don’t have to worry about accidentally spilling the dust and debris in the air filter all over your nice floors.
3. Remove the Filter and Tape the Trash Bag Shut
Now you’re ready to open up the vent that your air filter is in and carefully remove it. You may even want to wear gloves while doing this if you’re concerned about getting its contaminants on your hands.
If your air filter is especially dirty, it could make sense to place some plastic on the ground while you’re removing it. This will help you make absolutely sure that you don’t get any of its dirt on your floors.
4. Put Your Filter in an Outdoor Trashcan
After you’ve successfully removed the filter and taped the bag shut, the only thing that’s left to do is to place it into an outdoor trashcan. This will get the mess out of your home once and for all so that you don’t have to worry about it any longer.
5. Replace the Air Filter with a New One
Now you’re ready to replace the old filter with a new one. Make sure that you follow the arrows on the package to place the air filter into your HVAC system the correct way. You may also need to get the measurement of your old air filter so that you can make sure you purchase a new one that’s the correct size.
